Description

Sol is the name of the wine, which in the local dialect means soil. Sol is Barbacàn's premier wine and everything a high quality Valtellina wine should be.

Vine Age: 20-50 years

Area of Origin: Valtellina Superiore Valgella wines are those made under the Valtellina Superiore DOCG, specifically within the Valgella subregion. Valgella is one of five viticulture subzones identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Inferno, Sassella, Grumello and Maroggia.

Harvest: The Chiavennasca (local name for Nebbiolo) grapes are manually harvested in 20 kg baskets, which are loaded on the shoulders like backpacks for ease of walking up and down the steep, stone steps.

Vinification: Grapes are destemmed and softly pressed. Fermentation occurs with native yeast. Fermentation and maceration on the skins has no predetermined duration but is done without changing the natural balance of each vintage and waiting patiently for the full swing of the sugar into alcohol. The wine matures on its lees in oak barrels for 12 months. With the first warm days of June, it spontaneously starts malolactic fermentation, which naturally ends in the cooler month of September. The wine then ages for 6 months in stainless steel and another 6 months in the bottle before release.

Tasting Notes: Sol Valtellina Superiore is poetic. This is melodic mountain Nebbiolo whose rose hips invite you dancing. Bits of mushroom and spice slip and slide over delicately leathered cherries and crushed pine needles with lively acidity and tannins. Pair Sol Valtellina Superiore with comfort food like hearty stews and meat roasts.
