Back Label Text:

My brother and I remember making mixtapes of carefully arranged tracks meant to convey a specific message to the listener.  So too our wine, Mixtape, was made to capture the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Mixtape is a field blend of several varietals.  We fermented this wine at cooler temperature to capture the fresh fruit aromas.  Balanced with a touch of sweetness, this wine will have you pining for auto-reverse.

In 2003, our parents planted two acres of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir vines on an old cherry farm in the Leelanau Peninsula.  We had been visiting the area for years: spring, summer, fall, and winter.  We would spend time with our grandparents and marvel in the beauty of this area.  Now we had new purpose, a plot of land and two thousand vines with which to craft wines we loved and could relate to.

Over the following seven years, the land’s magnetism drew us from other careers to this place with this common goal in mind.  By 2010, we were both living and working here. Our first vintage together brought good weather and great fruit.  Learning winemaking through hands-on, heads-down hard work, and help from this area’s respected winemakers, we produced a pair of unique wines that express the fruit and our style in a way we hope you enjoy.

Big and Little brother, making Big wines from this Little Peninsula.

With 2011 and 2012 producing more quality fruit, we expanded our offerings to include other wines, including Treehouse White Pinot Noir, Mixtape blended white, and C-3 Pinot sparkling Brut.

Since 2013 we have released Dune Climb which is a Sauvignon Blanc from the Mike Anton (Mike’s father-in-law) vineyard just north of the L.Mawby property. We have also released Open Road, a rose made from Pinot Gris and Marechal Foch. We have experimented with sparkling cider and Pommeau (an apple dessert wine).

Also in 2013 we purchased 30 acres on Stoney Point, just East of Suttons Bay. In 2016 we planted 5 acres of vinifera on this site: Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Gamay Noir.  These young vines will be producing as early as the 2018 vintage.

The goals we have for our wines can be summarized in one word: Balance. We aim for a balanced vine canopy in the vineyard during the growing season. We strive to maximize quality and yield based on the style of wine we are making, so balancing crop load per vine is critical. We want a balance of sugar, acid and flavor when we decide to pick the grapes. We want to balance flavors, alcohol, acidity, sweetness, and mouthfeel when we make our blends. And we want to make sure our wines and styles complement one another to make a strong portfolio of products. We believe strongly that blending grapes together can often result in a more complex and higher quality wine than individual varietal wines. To that end we have several wines that are blends. We believe strongly in sustainable vineyard practices that include limiting pesticides, planting beneficial crops in row middles, irrigating responsibly, and general respect for the land.
