Soils: The soils throughout Redwood Valley and the Ukiah/Calpella area are based on sedimentary erosion from eons of glaciers and rainfall in these regions. The proportions of sand, silt and clay vary depending on the site, and these variations can have a big impact on the mouthfeel and acid profile of the wines.
Farming: All of the farming is performed strictly according to organic principles and practices. The Barra and Lolonis vineyards have been in their respective families for generations, while the Devito Vineyard is being cared for by Pete Johnson, owner of Hawkeye Ranch, and whose family has been farming in Mendocino for generations.
Vinification: Each vineyard was picked and fermented separately. The whole clusters were destemmed and fermented in stainless tanks until they reached dryness. Approximately 1/3 of the Devito and Lolonis grapes were also pressed directly and fermented on their own. The macerated and direct press lots were blended together just prior to bottling, and 18 ppm SO2 was added at that time.
Tasting Notes: The maceration on the skins lends this wine exceptional texture and mouthfeel. The gentle tannins work in harmony with the full texture that Chardonnay can contribute. Notes of apricot and stone fruit stand out on the nose, but a fine streak of minerality, plushness and acid carries the wine through the finish.
