Hot Dog: Carolina Slaw Dog
Region: Carolinas
What a blast it was welcoming Summer with the Puerto Rico dog. Those potato sticks will be missed dearly. As we head into July, sunshine, patios, and good times are on our mind. This month’s dog captures summertime in Chicago and is built to pair perfectly with our Roaring Table Collaboration Lager - Tea Time! Introducing the Carolina Slaw Dog!
The Hot Dog: Carolina Slaw Dog
The Region: Carolinas
The Story: The Slaw Dog first gained popularity during the 1920s and gained more attention during the Great Depression in West Virginia. Sharing a similar origin story to many of the Regional Sandwich lore, the Slaw Dog popped off due to cabbage and hot dogs being readily available and fairly inexpensive. The Slaw Dog quickly spread throughout the coastal and Piedmont region of the US and in the 50s & 60s became very popular in the Carolinas. Today, you’ll find it from backyard cookouts to roadside diners across the U.S.—but especially in the Southeast
Traditional Build: IStart with a tasty frank, boiled or cooked whatever way you prefer. From there add yellow mustard, a meaty chili sauce, sweet onions, and cole slaw. It’s important to remember that the Cole slaw is crafted to be the ideal partner to the hot dog itself. You can order the Slaw Dog with or without chili, however it is critical that the slaw is made correctly!
BP Spin: We're turning up the summer vibes with a lighter and cooler take made just for July! No chili here—just a refreshingly crisp combo of flavor and crunch that hits the spot on a sunny day.
We start with a snappy Vienna Beef frank, boil it, then char it up a bit on the flat top for that just off the grill taste. We then layer on our house-made Slaw, a handful of sweet diced onions, and top it off with a swiggle of bright yellow mustard. It’s simple, it’s satisfying, and it’s built for sunny Chicago summer afternoons, patio sitting, and good vibes!
Perfect Pairing:Grab the July Carolina Slaw Dog and pair it with our NEW Tea Time Summer Lager—brewed in collaboration with our friends at Roaring Table. Light, crisp, and refreshing, it’s the ultimate companion for this Southern-inspired, sunshine-ready dog.
See y’all soon!
